iPierian plans to apply its technology to the discovery and development of therapies for cardiovascular diseases that have limited treatment options. The company is currently working on calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) through its collaboration with the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, and will expand into other cardiovascular diseases through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies.
CAVD is the leading cause of heart disease in adults in the U.S. CAVD is a slowly progressive disorder with a disease continuum that ranges from mild valve thickening without obstruction of blood flow, called aortic sclerosis, to severe calcification with impaired aortic leaflet motion, or aortic stenosis.
